Stevens Canyon Road Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, Washington | June 1981 & June 2016

Excerpt from my grandmother’s travel journal on June 3rd, 1981: “Into Rainier National Park, sprinkles on the windshield. Between 200” high trees – fir, red cedar, hemlocks – above mossy rocks, shimmering green young tree leaves & ferns. West towards Paradise!“

At Mount Rainier, hover flies like this one pollinate more flowers than bees! They have black and yellow stripes to mimic bees in order to scare off predators but do not have stingers like bees. National Pollinator Week (June 20-26) celebrates the essential role pollinators play in our natural environment. Pollinators can be insects like bees, ants, and beetles, but also birds, bats, and small mammals. What pollinators do you see where you live?

Some places are too beautiful to describe. One of those places is Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. Experience the park’s splendor firsthand on Monday with free entrance. To celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, all national parks, wildlife refuges and other public lands are waiving their entrance fees. Mount Rainier provides a great backdrop for many activities, even taking your dog for a walk! While dogs are welcome on paved roads in the park, please remember a few rules to protect the park’s wilderness, wildlife, and other visitors. Dogs are permitted in parking lots, campgrounds, and on paved roads, and must be leashed at all times. They are not permitted on trails- even if those areas are covered in snow.
